Rear Naked Choke

Rear Naked Choke

A "Rear Naked Choke" (RNC) in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a submission technique where a practitioner gains control of their opponent's back, wraps their arm around their neck, and applies pressure by squeezing their elbows together, effectively cutting off blood flow to the brain and forcing a submission (tap out) or unconsciousness; considered one of the most effective chokeholds in BJJ due to its high leverage and ability to be applied from a dominant position on the back.

Key points about the Rear Naked Choke:

Application:
Performed from the "back mount" position, where the attacker is behind the opponent.
Mechanism:

The choke is applied by wrapping one arm around the opponent's neck and securing it by grabbing the bicep of the same arm with the other hand.

"Naked" meaning:
"Naked" refers to the fact that this choke can be applied without using the opponent's gi (uniform).

Alternative name:
In BJJ, the Rear Naked Choke is also called "Mata Leão," which translates to "Lion Killer" in Portuguese.
