Technical Stand-up

Technical Stand-up

The technical stand-up is a fundamental Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) technique that allows a fighter to safely stand up from a seated or prone position. It can be used as a defensive move to avoid attacks or as an offensive move to set up a takedown.

How to do a technical stand-up.
1. Start seated with one hand on the ground.
2. Retract the opposite leg.
3. Extend your leg to get up underneath you.
4. Lift your hip off the floor.
5. Bring your leg behind you by pulling it underneath your body.
6. Plant your foot on the ground behind you.
7. Stand up.

Variations of the technical stand-up:

Full technical stand-up: The most common version, starting with a base of a post on each side of your body.

Three quarter technical stand-up: Similar to the full stand-up, but you first post on your knee.

Half technical stand-up: Similar to the three quarter stand-up, but you use your elbow for base instead of your hand.

Reverse technical stand-up: Going from a standing or kneeling position back to the ground.

  • X guard stand up sweep

One of my favorite sweeps in jiu jitsu and its effective both with and without the gi. The key to pulling this technique off is to quickly extend and off balance your opponent and then perform the stand up technique while maintaining control of your partners leg. **I like to pull my knees to my...
