Ukimi or break falls is CRITICAL to learn prior to learning or practicing any throwing techniques. The ability to take a fall properly will prevent injury and lead to more enjoyable randori sessions. Standing Ukimi should be a staple in your warm up and drilling sessions. Also, proper falling techniques can really come in handy when learning any new sport.
